PARENT MENTOR PROGRAM

What is the Purpose of the Parent Mentor Program?

There are families in our community at risk for child abuse and/or neglect. These families need guidance to make a positive change for themselves and their families.

The Parent Mentor program works with families to bring about constructive change through support, guidance, instruction and/or treatment. They are also able to assist families meet with success as children transition from foster care and residential programs. The ultimate goal is to maintain children safely at home in order to spare them the trauma of separation.

How Does the Parent Mentor Program Help?

A Parent Mentor can help families do the best job possible in raising their children. The program recognizes that safety, permanency and well being, both in the home of origin or other placement, are essential to achieving a positive outcome for children. Without these essential family resources intact, a child's successful transition to adulthood is doubtful.

Parent Mentors work together with families to educate and support them in the following areas:

  • Essential parenting skills
  • Supervision
  • Hygiene issues
  • Non-physical means of discipline
  • Appropriate housing
  • Development of a budget
  • Advocacy and referral

Who makes up the Parent Mentors?

The Parent Mentor Team is made up of clinical staff, case managers and supervisors who provide individual and group treatment to parents, their children and other family members. Services are provided in the family's home as well as in community settings.

For over 27 years, Parent Mentors have been able to continue to assist families by focusing on parent-child interactions. Often, the goal is to help parents avoid ineffective parenting responses by learning effective ways of managing their children's behavior, and how to intervene with specific child and adolescent problems.

Our Parent Mentors possess over 45 years of combined experience in the areas of domestic violence, substance abuse, parenting education, mental health and trauma issues.
