BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS - FAQs
Make a Difference
Growing up is never easy. That's why having a mentor helps. A mentor
takes time to listen, give advice, and lets a child know that what
he or she has to say is meaningful.
The local Big Brothers Big Sisters program, part of Child & Family
Services, provides friendships and role models to boys and girls
living in the Greater New Bedford area. Having a Big Brother or
Sister can make a real difference in children's lives by helping
them to better handle life's ups and downs.
While there are several boys and girls matched up with a Big Brother
or Sister, there are always more Littles than Bigs. Sometimes the
youngsters, especially boys, spend months or even years on the
waiting list, hoping for a caring adult to volunteer. Be a
Friend Think about it. How many chances do you get to
really make a difference? Big Brothers Big Sisters will give you
that opportunity. By volunteering, you benefit a child directly and
see the good work you're doing week by week, month by month. Your
job is not to replace a parent but to be a friend.
Being a Big Brother or a Big Sister isn't hard. It means trips to
the park, afternoons shopping, watching a movie and playing a sport.
It's sitting down listening to what's going on in a child's life and
giving advice when asked. It's the closest thing to being a kid
again.
Who are the Littles? 1. Littles include boys and girls, ages 7 to 14 years. 2.
Littles come from all ethnic, racial and economic backgrounds.
3. Most Littles come from a single-parent home.

age. 3. Bigs must have a valid driver's license.

to make a positive difference in a child's life. The most important
thing they give is their time and friendship.
What is
required? 1. The goal is eight hours a month.
2. The commitment is for one year.
